Chikungunya: What You Need To Know

Signs and symptoms, and how to avoid mosquitoes that may carry Chikungunya.

What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted to humans by two types of mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, both of which bite aggressively in daytime.

How can I avoid getting it?

You need to try to prevent mosquito bites. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens.

Where is it most common?

Outbreaks have occurred in over 60 countries including tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. In recent decades, it has spread to Europe and the Americas. In 2007, disease transmission was reported for the first time in a localized outbreak in northeastern Italy. Outbreaks have since been recorded in France and Croatia.

What are signs and symptoms?

Most people infected with chikungunya virus will develop some symptoms, beginning usually 3-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. Most patients feel better within a week. In some people, the joint pain may persist for months.
